For the love of the ocean
For the love of the ocean is a way of embracing the topic of the ocean in a holistic way. It allows to include the purpose of an exercise without limiting it in manner or approaches. From the trails of curiosity to the challenges of science, and allowing for art and goodwill to bring forward new ideas, via innovation or comparison of elements or topics. Just like a century ago, we are again in a place where technology is accelerating, and we are able to revisit and rediscover assumptions and conventional wisdom. The Ocean becomes once again the mysterious edge of the planet in many ways.
We speak of rediscovering the Ocean and mapping the seabed, sounds simple enough in concept, and yet... we are pushing innovation into every challenge. The technology is new, but many times we could be another chapter in a Jules Verne book.
The topics shared around the Ocean are multiple.
The topics shared around the Ocean are multiple.
The bigger driver today is the fact that the topic of Climate is driven by the Ocean, as in if we solve the Ocean we solve the Climate. By solving the main element of the planet, namely the Ocean, we get to solve our Climate issue... supposedly.
So having benefited from the books and documentaries of an era of television and literature, how does the new media embrace this new phase for the planet? More explorers are telling more stories, and trying new challenges... and more people can participate, not to mention new communities can step forward and share. It is a new culture that suddenly gets to participate in topics and matters that were once exclusive to a handful of 'experts', today those same experts are available to support 'the curious-minded ones' in several ways. In sharing these exercises we raise the general level of awareness and that is a good start, as if we get more people to understand more we can drive the level of awareness to where more of us can be active participants in the well-being of the oceans.
While making Oceanography and its multiple fields of science available to more people is a full-time exercise, it is also important to bring in more people from wherever they are, which can include Art, Books, Music, Exploration, or dedicated fields of Science. Offering new ways to have more people participate and engage through their curiosity, is part of the exercise that we are looking to have here.
